A runaway truck almost killed workers on a Water Treatment site in Perth recently. 150 construction workers walked off the job on the site as a result of the near accident, in addition to a number of other safety concerns.

Read what a post on Skynews.com.au reported about the disturbing incident:

The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) of Western Australia said members elected on Monday to down tools at the Brookfield Multiplex-operated site after the potentially deadly incident on Saturday.

The union alleged the brakes failed on the heavy duty truck and said workers were lucky not to have been killed or injured.

The truck came to rest in a ditch.

CFMEU assistant secretary Joe McDonald said there had been a spate of safety incidents on the site and the latest was ‘the last straw’.

‘We have called for all vehicles and equipment to be checked thoroughly on the site,’ he said.

Watch the video below which demonstrates how destructive a runaway truck can be. The truck driver involved blacked out and collided with a convenience store. Thankfully nobody was injured in the incident.

Pedestrians are often the most vulnerable when it comes to being injured by runaway trucks. There are a few reasons why trucks runaway, such as brake failures and even driver fatigue.

In order to overcome brake failures, trucks need to be properly maintained and serviced regularly, truckies as well as operators must make sure of this.

Truckies should also do a quick inspection of the vehicle before embarking on a journey to ensure that brakes, lights etc. are all in good working order before beginning a journey.

Drivers also need to ensure they engage in proper fatigue management measures to avoid falling asleep at the wheel.
