Acton Tunnel $1million Damage Caused by Truck Driver

tunnel crash

This is what the Acton Tunnel looked like after a crash that happened in October last year, caused by a truck carrying an excavator. The truck slammed into the tunnel ceiling on Parkes Way on October 20, causing damage of more than a million dollars.

The truck tore through the ceiling for over 50 metres and left a trail of debris, forcing the closure of the tunnel and subsequent major traffic delays.

The driver, 49 year old Stephen Tietze admitted to a charge of failing to comply with dimension requirements for driving the truck.

The driver had apparently safely passed through the eastbound side of the tunnel earlier in the day, which is why he assumed the truck would pass by smoothly on the other side. The driver has been given 18 months to pay the fine.
