The number of heavy vehicle fatal crashes seems to have resumed their downward trend, good news for all road users.

According to the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) statistics there were record low numbers of fatal crashes, at 176 for the 12 months to June, below 180 for the first time in a decade.

The decline has been credited mostly to the heavy articulated truck sector where fatal crashes dropped by 16.1 per cent, down from 112 to 94.

At the start of the year the number of truck crashes on New South Wales roads caused concern however figures show that fatal heavy articulated crashes between June 2017 and last June fell 14.3 per cent in that state. During that time frame the number of fatal truck crashes dropped from 42 to 36.
