Australian Trucking Association Argues – Improved Access Good for Economy

The Australian Trucking Association through it’s chair Geoff Crouch has stated that improving heavy vehicle access will benefit the economy by lowering costs for Australian consumers and boosting jobs.

In its recent submission to the national truck law review on heavy vehicle access, The ATA called for governments to commit to a national reform program to deliver more productive heavy vehicle road access.

Mr Crouch said in 2011 it was predicted that the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) would bring billions in economic benefits, mostly due to the assumed better access it would promote, however this was not the case.  In a report by Deloitte Access Economics, commissioned by the ATA, it was revealed that productivity declined since the Heavy Vehicle National Law was implemented.

It argues that access decisions under the HVNL need reform at the roots. Mr Crouch believes the new law should ensure road managers deliver ‘consistent, justified decisions’ that are subject to external review.
