The federal government’s commitment of $350,000 towards the development of new codes of practice based on the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s guidelines released earlier this year has been welcomed by the industry. The grant will help heavy vehicle industry bodies and individual operators, covering development and registration costs.

The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) and the Australian Logistics Council (ALC) who have both been involved in consultation with the NHVR, have welcomed the move.

The new codes it is hoped will aid businesses in improving safety standards and avoiding the risk of breaching the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL).

The code has been called an important component of the NHVR’s safety plan which also includes new chain of responsibility laws, a national roadworthiness program, a National Heavy Vehicle Inspection Manual and checklists.
