Industry Welcomes ATO Common Sense Approach

The Australian Taxation Office’s (ATO) decision to reverse it’s stance on drivers’ meal expenses has been welcomed by the trucking industry and the Transport Workers Union (TWU), who have also called for the federal government to act to ensure the taxation changes will not be reintroduced further down the line.

The “unacceptable ruling” was introduced without stakeholder consultation which the union says left drivers “significantly out of pocket”.

The revision means that drivers will now have more money to spend on healthy meals, which are usually more costly than fast food options.

The union also said this would reduce the financial pressure on drivers who have to deal with the rising cost of living when their wage growth wasn’t rising comparatively.

The ATA said the revision would help around 38,000 truck drivers.  For more see https://www.fullyloaded.com.au/industry-news/1710/industry-welcomes-atos-common-sense-approach
