Government is planning on mandating electronic stability control (ESC) in new trucks and roll stability control (RSC) in new trailers to help reduce rollovers and improve road safety.

NatRoad supports the move after consulting with its members in a group convened to consider the issues.

Research shows that 28.9 per cent of major crash incidents involved a vehicle rollover on the road, so efforts to reduce rollovers are welcomed, NatRoad said.

The changes are expected to come into effect around 2019 and 2021. Government is currently reviewing feedback and will likely make a final decision about the extent of the new technical requirements and final timing later on this year.
