A new warning system will be installed at a bridge in Melbourne's west

A new warning system will be installed at a bridge in Melbourne’s west which has become notorious after being crashed into multiple times by heavy vehicles.

The Napier Street bridge in Footscray has been crashed into more than 70 times in the past 12 years and each time stopping the Werribee Line and risking the structural integrity of the bridge.

The new warning system will cost $1.2 million and will alert drivers if their vehicles are too high and will direct them to an alternative route.

Part of the warning will include laser beams being triggered when trucks are too tall and the lights turning red to prevent the truck from proceeding.

The system was desperately needed, Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said despite the already 28 height warning signs in place on the approach to the bridge. See more at http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-10-29/laser-technology-to-be-used-napier-st-bridge-footscray/9097080
