A probe has been launched by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) following a number of truck fires starting in the engine bay of prime movers over the past year.
The NHVR said a spate of high profile incidents have taken place recently highlighting the need for a solution, including a semi-trailer fire on the Princess Highway near Wollongong in January, as well as several others.
While the regulator does have a specific interest in prime mover fires, it said it was also interested in the issue of general truck fires.
The NHVR began its investigations and research by holding discussions with operators, vehicle and component manufacturers about the causes of truck fires.
The issue is not new though, the National Transport Insurance (NTI) raised concerns in 2013.
