NHVR Looks to Technology to Tackle Fatigue Issue

It was announced at The NHVR’s Fatigue Safety Forum that the government would be tackling the issue of fatigue in the trucking industry by investing in field trials of fatigue monitoring technologies.

The federal government and NHVR have pledged upwards of a combined $500,000 towards trials to determine the effectiveness of technology in reducing road deaths and trauma. The government highlighted the importance of the initiative given that driver fatigue causes between 8 to 20 per cent of all Australian road crashes.

One of the elements of the SmartCap technology is a headband, called LifeBand which can either be strapped to headwear or worn on its own. The company says the technology provides real-time monitoring using brainwave technology to determine alertness and eliminates micro-sleep with fatigue measurements. There’s also a mobile app to supplement the service.
