The nation’s leading truck insurer National Transport Insurance (NTI), has backed NatRoad’s recent announcement of a program to tackle the heavy vehicle transport skills shortage.

The insurer called on all industry bodies to work together to develop a solution, with the NTI’s general manager commercial Mike Edmonds suggesting that increasing diversity and reducing unnecessary barriers is necessary.

Geoff Crouch Australian Trucking Association (ATA) has called on governments to show the same commitment as the industry in upgrading truck driver licensing.

He said a recent review showed that the standard of training and assessment was inadequate and that government needed to act rapidly to improve driver licensing which would improve safety and attract more people to the industry.
