Record Fatality Fine Imposed after Worker’s Ship Death

A record high $1million fine has been imposed on transport giant Toll Group following the 2014 death of a stevedore employed by the company.

The group’s MD expressed contrition and his company accepted responsibility in the death of the worker in May 2014 while he was assisting in the loading of a ship.

A WorkSafe investigation found that while the company had numerous safety measures in place, they were inadequate, as is evidenced by the tragic incident.

WorkSafe said the court’s decision should be a “stark reminder” to other employers that the safety of workers should be paramount at all times.
