Road Safety Advocate Says Electronic Logbook Will Make Life Harder

According to a leading transport fatigue researcher, electronic work diaries (EWD) are “doomed to fail” if the trucking industry is not also reformed.

The researcher, Professor Ann Williamson from the University of New South Wales says the main issue is fatigue, putting commercial pressures on the transport industry but the side issue is the electronic work diaries.

According to the Professor the EWDs will not solve any fatigue problems and is in fact putting more pressure on drivers. The EWDs will likely become drivers main focus and will add to their stress.

She emphasized the need to address the economic pressures behind long hours, speeding and lack of vehicle maintenance.

She was speaking at the Australasian Road Safety Conference in Canberra recently.
