The Long Haul Drivers Association (LHDA) has blamed road conditions for the spate of crashes on the M5. In a critique of the conditions in major cities like Sydney and Melbourne, Brian Turpie of the LHDA, an advocate for truck drivers, said the M5 fiasco which caused chaos recently could have been avoided.

It was the second truck accident in 6 weeks in the same location and caused by the same thing, although no one acknowledged it, according to Turpie. He said the crashes were caused by the road works on the M5, which were being poorly executed by the contractor.
