TWU Calls for Safety Measures on International Workers Memorial Day

The Transport Workers’ Union (TWU) has urged action to improve transport workers’ safety this International Workers’ Memorial Day.

Each year we remember fallen workers worldwide on 28 April, but this year the TWU reminded us that transport worker fatalities make up 40 per cent of all workplace deaths.

Transport workers have one of the highest workplace death rates of any industry in Australia, this year claiming 19 lives and claiming 64 lives last year.

National Assistant Secretary Michael Kaine blamed the federal government for an increase in fatalities after it called off the independent tribunal, while NatRoad Chief Executive Warren Clark believes HVNL changes may be key to safety improvements.
