Truck drivers with literacy or print media impairments may find some relief when it comes to work diaries with an exemption from The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.

Graeme Spillman a 54 year old truck driver who suffers from mild dyslexia managed to obtain an exemption after getting a medical certificate from a doctor.

The driver was frustrated with his work diary struggles, having made mistakes which cost him financially in the form of fines.

One day an officer stopped the driver and noticed he was having problems with his work diary. He then explained to him about the exemptions which Mr Spillman was eligible for.

Drivers with literacy problems may be able to meet their requirements for the National Work Diary through nominating an alternative method of recording work and rest breaks.

Mr Spillman for example records his work diary on a voice recorder which he says is a lot less stressful.
