The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) recently highlighted the benefits of a clean truck including the importance of a clean chassis/suspension and other underpinnings.
In the message, the regulator detailed a case from August 2014 when a driver of a prime mover semi-trailer combination was killed after the prime mover’s suspension failed.
In an inquiry, it came to light that during an inspection after the incident, a notable build-up of contaminants was identifed on the vehicle, in the region of the failed suspension component.
The NHVR recommended periodic cleaning of vehicles, components and structures including a thorough visual inspection and ensuring safety critical components are examined in their entirety at regular intervals to identify and rectify issues before they pose a safety risk.
